This 1972 Buick Riviera was sold new at Lindeman Buick in Westfield, New Jersey, before being traded back in to the current owner’s former dealership in 1979. The car is finished in Charcoal Mist Metallic over black vinyl upholstery and powered by a 455ci V8 mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. Further equipment includes 15″ slotted steel wheels as well as power steering and front disc brakes along with a 60/40 split front bench seat, an AM/FM stereo, and power windows. Work under current ownership is noted to have involved a repaint as well as a recent suspension overhaul. Now showing 95k miles.
The third-generation Riviera was styled under the direction of Bill Mitchell by future Nissan design chief Jerry Hirshberg and features quad headlamps, polished “Sweapspear” bodyside moldings, and a boat-tail-inspired rear end. This example left the factory finished in Charcoal Mist Metallic with a silver vinyl top and was repainted circa 2010. The seller notes various dings and scratches around the body along with bubbling paint under the vinyl top near the rear quarter windows. A replacement silver vinyl top is included in the sale.
The 15″ slotted steel wheels feature black centers, bright accents, and Riviera-branded center caps. They are mounted with 225/75 Hankook Optimo H724 tires. The car is equipped with power steering, while braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums. The front brake pads and rotors were replaced in 2022. A suspension overhaul under current ownership is said to have involved replacing the tie-rod ends and control arm bushings.
The 60/40 split front bench bench seat is upholstered in black vinyl, which extends to the rear bench. The cabin is accented by woodgrain and engine-turned trim, and equipment includes an AM/FM stereo, lap belts, and power windows. The driver-side armrest has been repaired, and the seller notes that the air conditioning, clock, and driver-side power seat adjustment do not work.
A three-spoke steering wheel frames a 120-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 95k miles, approximately 5k of which have been added over the last 45 years of ownership.
The 455ci V8 was factory rated at 250 horsepower. The starter and spark plugs were replaced in October 2022. Recent work has involved an oil change, replacement of the battery, and tune-up.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission.
